Guidance on how to format Caption when using Document Automation

When you're automating your Caption, your Microsoft Word document must have the right setup, so you won't experience any formatting issues.

Below we explain the two most common setups that possibly cause formatting issues and how to fix them.

1. Keep your " ) " signs aligned

The ultimate goal is that regardless of how long your Client or Opposing Party's names are, your " ) " should be always aligned:

2. Turn on the Show/Hide Icon

This helps you better understand how your document is formatted. By default, every time you press the Tab key, the insertion point will move 1/2 inch to the right- which will be indicated with multiple right arrows.

This setup is not recommended when you automate your document and we want only one arrow to appear. If your Caption involves multiple arrows, follow the steps below:

3. Delete all the Tabs

4. Add Tab Stops in your Ruler

  • Adding Tab Stops to your Ruler will help you change the size of tabs ( which eventually locks your correct formatting)

  • Put your cursor in the Ruler and an arrow will automatically appear

  • Drag the arrow to the place you want your Tab Stop

    ​If you don't have the Ruler in your Word, you can turn it on, by View > Ruler

5. Align your " ) " sign

  • Place your cursor in front of the " ) " sign and hit the "Tab" key

  • Now you should have only one blue right arrow

This one tab will hold your formatting, regardless of how long the name is:

6. Automatically Capitalize a Field's value

If any of your fields need to appear in ALL Caps, follow these steps:

  • Select the Placeholder by clicking the three dots on the left side

  • Press "control + D" (PC) or "command + D" (Mac)

  • Click the "All caps" checkbox and click the "OK" button in the bottom right.
